Between Saint John Lateran and Porta Maggiore, at 23 Via Statilia, the street of the arcade's of Nero's imposing Aqueduct (that cross the splendid Villa Wolkonsky park, the British Ambassador's residence), the Hotel Emona Aquaeductus is an excellent solution among 3-star hotels in Rome, for comfortable access to public transportation and the most important and famous archeological sites, monuments and museums of Rome.

The bus and tram that go to the Termini train station, the Coliseum and the Vatican stop 50 meters from the hotel and, 500 meters away, there's the Manzoni stop on line A of the subway that reaches the Termini station and the Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna) in just a few minutes.

Close to the Hotel Emona Aquaeductus, Rome offers splendid churches and important monuments from Imperial Rome.

A 10-minute walk brings you to the magnificent Basilica of Saint John Lateran and in 5 minutes on foot you come to the Chiesa di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme and Porta Maggiore, with its mysterious underground Basilica and the original tomb of Eurisace.

Basilica of Saint John Lateran. The oldest church in Rome and second only to Saint Peter's Basilica for the importance and richness of its art. Begun in 312, it was revisited, enriched and stripped of architectural and artistic works up to the 20th century. Today, it is a splendid and unique example that, over the centuries, has preserved mosaics and medieval marble decorations, paintings by mannerist masters, Borromini's renovation in the 17th century and Galilei's 18th-century façade. The large square in front of the church contains the tallest obelisk in Rome and Palazzo Laterano, at one time the Pope's summer residence and site of famous councils. There is also a lovely Cloister with lovely Cosmati-style double columns.

Chiesa di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. An ancient pilgrim destination, it preserves relics of the True Cross of Jesus. It was constructed on the site of the palace of Empress Helena, mother of Constantine I, who brought the holy relics to Rome. With an imposing façade, the last display of the Baroque that preceded Neoclassicism, the church is decorated with polychrome marble and stuccoes and adorned with splendid mosaics and paintings.

Porta Maggiore. The Porta Maggiore area is an interesting archeological site uncovered between the 19th and 20th centuries and recently restored. The 1883 restoration of the gate that was constructed in 52 AD as a monumental passage for the Prenestina and Labicana roads, brought to light the singular tomb of Eurisace, a Roman baker, decorated with the typical elements of ancient ovens. There is also a very interesting subterranean Basilica with surprising decorations that are intact but still surrounded by mystery.
